This updated edition is a guide to Jewish living, a parenting manual, and a resource to help deepen your understanding of how Judaism can enrich daily life. How to Raise a Jewish Child combines a developmental understanding of how children learn and grow, a respect for traditional Jewish wisdom about children and families, and faith in the vitality of the diverse constellations that comprise today's Jewish families.
My collaborator on this project was Karen Kushner. Karen, a social worker and gifted educator, is the director of Project Welcome, a San Francisco outreach initiative welcoming interfaith families, unaffiliated Jews, and spiritual seekers into synagogues. The co-author of four children's books, including Because Nothing Looks Like God, she lives in San Francisco.
This new edition has a new title. The old one, “How to be a Jewish Parent” might have dissuaded some non-Jewish parents from picking up the book. But Karen and I know that there are many wonderful non-Jews interested in and committed to raising Jewish children. And “no experience necessary” is not just a cute marketing ploy, but a fact: raising a Jewish child is not only about passing on memories. Most of all, it is about learning and sharing a positive attitude about making Jewish choices. And for that, all that is required is an open mind and an open heart.
